A new plan from the International Olympic Committee shows where ski events from super-G to slalom are planned to be hosted when the Winter Olympics touch down in the French Alps in 2030.

While we’re still years away from the return of the Winter Games, the plan, released on Wednesday, provides an early look at which resort towns will see Olympic ski action in the future.
Alpine skiing is split across two French locales, Courchevel and Val d’Isère. The former is taking the speed events of downhill and super-G, while the latter is taking the tech events of giant slalom and slalom. Courchevel will also host the alpine racing combined events.
Two other venues, Serre-Chevalier and Montgenèvre, will split the freestyle events, although the part of the plan shared so far didn’t specify which would take individual events, like slopestyle, big air, or moguls. Montgenèvre is also hosting ski mountaineering, which debuted in the Olympics this year.
Ski jumping’s coming to Courchevel alongside alpine racing, with the Haute-Savoie cluster hosting cross-country and biathlon. La Plagne’s the home of sliding sports.
A notable exclusion from the announcement was freeride. The discipline got the nod for an Olympic debut earlier this year-sparking excitement and debate-but it appears organizers haven’t settled on a venue quite yet.
While race courses and half pipes are built and maintained on manicured slopes, freeride requires steep off-piste terrain where weather and snow conditions can pose significant challenges for a smooth event-that’s likely a major factor being discussed as organizers determine which slope makes the most sense.

POWDERpreviously reported that the yet to be publicly identified venue would be staged in the Montgenèvre venue cluster near the freestyle events. Serre Chevalier, which is close to Montgenèvre, held a Freeride World Tour Qualifier competition
. The French Alps, as you might expect, have no shortage of terrain that could be used for a freeride competition, both inside and outside the boundaries of ski resorts.
Beyond skiing and west of the mountains, the Lyon metro area is scheduled to host the Olympic disciplines of curling, ice hockey, figure skating, and short track speed skating. Because Lyon doesn’t have an existing venue, the long track speed skating will be held in the Netherlands at the Thialf ice arena.
This won’t be the first time an Olympic event has been held far from the central hub of a given Games. During Paris 2024, surfing was held in Tahiti, thousands and thousands of miles away from the French capital.
