Contrary to popular belief, the New York Giants’ season is not over, despite the devastating, season-ending injury to quarterback Jaxson Dart.

After all, Tom Brady’s legendary career was launched by a Week 2 injury to Drew Bledsoe that initially brought doom and gloom to the New England Patriots.
It’s hard to envision journeyman Jameis Winston leading the Giants to the same heights that Dart would have. But there are ways for the Giants to salvage the 2026 season.
Here are three ways they can do so.
Build Around Jameis Winston’s Strengths
Winston can still sling it around, despite Monday night’s disaster. He developed a rapport with Darnell Mooney and Isaiah Likely in preseason, and he’ll still have an ever-improving Malik Nabers to throw to, since Nabers won’t be bottled up by Trent McDuffie every game.
Former interim coach Mike Kafka put Winston in a position to succeed last season, and the backup quarterback helped the Giants push the Detroit Lions to overtime on the road and nearly knock off the playoff-bound Green Bay Packers.
Obviously, it’s a year later, but it’s hard to envision Winston losing that much of his fastball, particularly to those of us who watched play pretty well during the preseason.

Win With Defense and Running the Ball
Dart is the engine that makes the Giants’ offense go, but he is only one of 53 players on their roster. Harbaugh has dealt with quarterback injuries before, notably to Lamar Jackson in Baltimore, and he found a way to win in Green Bay with Tyler Huntley last season.
So the Giants could cover for Winston’s error-prone ways by taking the game out of his hands. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy wants to win running the ball, and this is an opportunity to do so, though not as Nagy would have intended.
For example, the Philadelphia Eagles are 2-0 and went to the playoffs last season with an imperfect offense. The Giants have the personnel to do the same if their defense plays the part.
Consider Outside Help
There are some situations that require outside counsel, and the injury to Dart seems like one of them. The Giants need to add a quarterback anyway, at least to be the third quarterback behind Winston and new No. 2 quarterback Jake Haener, and could consider a reclamation project like Will Levis, J.J. McCarthy or Mac Jones.
One name to keep tabs on is Justin Fields, who is now Patrick Mahomes’ backup in Kansas City. Fields has flamed out with the Jets, Steelers and Bears, but he has a history with Nagy, who was his head coach in his rookie season (2021), and led a quarterback-heavy rushing attack to 1,143 yards in Chicago in 2022.
