The Tennessee Titans have reached Week 3 with no room left for another encouraging loss. Locked On Titans host Tyler Rowland called the matchup a must-win opportunity, arguing that the Titans cannot afford to waste favorable circumstances simply because an ugly victory may not change outside perceptions. Tennessee lost its first two games to the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles, and a third straight defeat would make its upcoming stretch against the Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, and Indianapolis Colts far more difficult to navigate.
Rowland’s offensive blueprint starts with possession. He wants the Titans to run outside rather than repeatedly challenge Giants interior defenders D. J. Reader and Shelby Harris, then use manageable downs to create selective play-action shots. The approach could be complicated by the Titans’ own backfield health: running backs Tony Pollard (ankle) and Tyjae Spears (ankle) did not practice Wednesday. Pollard was limited Thursday while Spears remained out of action.
Titans quarterback Cam Ward carries the most important assignment in Rowland’s view. Dennard Wilson, now the Giants’ defensive coordinator after two seasons in Tennessee, built his scheme around disguising coverages and simulated pressure. Ward said this week that Wilson’s fronts and blitz packages will be a challenge, putting an emphasis on protection calls, quick answers against pressure, and avoiding the long-yardage situations that can derail a run-first plan.

Rowland also wants Tennessee to attack vertically when the opportunity appears, particularly if Wilson crowds the line of scrimmage. He argued the offense cannot allow the defense to squeeze the field after attempting only one pass of at least 20 yards through two games. The host identified wide receiver Carnell Tate as a candidate for those shots and left tackle Dan Moore Jr. as a key protector against a Giants edge group led by Abdul Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Defensively, Rowland’s priority is forcing Winston into difficult passing situations by stopping Giants running back Cam Skattebo early. He expects the Titans to disguise their own looks, crowd the line, and take away middle-of-the-field throws to tight end Isaiah Likely and wide receiver Malik Nabers (shoulder). Safety Amani Hooker, Rowland said, could be central to that plan by rotating forward into underneath coverage and challenging Winston to identify the coverage after the snap.
A win would not erase Tennessee’s uneven start, but it would give the Titans their first result in the standings before a demanding October schedule. For Rowland, the standard is simple: control the ball, make Winston uncomfortable, and leave MetLife Stadium with a win regardless of style.
