“We are KSSU, Sacramento State student run radio station, and what we do is we offer one hour a week shows for volunteers,” Hector Hernandez, the station’s student services coordinator, said in an interview with The Bee.
KSSU was created in 1991 after students pushed for a station focused specifically on student programming.

“There was a radio station at that time, but that one was more commercial,” Hernandez said. “This time, we wanted a radio station just specifically for the students, run by the students, and so the students back in 1991 fought for the licensing and fought for the funding, and they got it.”
Students contribute beyond their shows by working events, reviewing CDs and writing blog posts, Hernandez said. The station’s free-format programming can include music and interviews, as long as it is FCC-compliant.
“So now, 35 years later, we’re still standing here as KSSU, and we have a lot planned really for our 35th anniversary,” Hernandez said. “But really, it’s a milestone that not many other radio college radio stations get to make.”
