CHP officials said the driver was traveling in the far-right lane of southbound Highway 99 south of Twin Cities Road when the sedan drifted left and sideswiped a slower-moving construction truck traveling in the far-left lane. The impact sent the car veering right across all lanes of traffic and the shoulder before it left the freeway and came to rest on West Stockton Boulevard, directly in the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer.

The tractor-trailer’s driver was unable to avoid the sedan and crashed into it, CHP said. The sedan became fully engulfed in flames after the impact.

The car’s driver died at the scene. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was expected to release the driver’s identity after notifying family members.
