Tours and other visits to the island will shut down from Oct. 26 to about Nov. 18 to complete repairs on a ferry dock, the National Park Service said in a Monday news release.

Crews will replace pilings on the dock during the shutdown, rangers said.

The island closed for six days in April for inspections of the pilings and temporary repairs.

“Completing the repair work this fall will help ensure safe and reliable public access to Alcatraz Island for years to come,” rangers said.

The work is being funded by Alcatraz City Cruises, a park service concessionaire that makes more than 3,200 ferry trips carrying 1.5 million visitors to Alcatraz Island annually.

Bad weather may cause delays to the work and scheduled reopening, rangers said.

Visitors with reservations during the closure will be notified of cancellations and receive a refund or an alternate ferry trip by Alcatraz City Cruises.

Alcatraz operated as a federal prison from 1934 to 1962. The prison housed such famous inmates as Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Robert Stroud.

It was featured in films such as “Birdman of Alcatraz” and “Escape from Alcatraz.”
