The investigation into the fatal deputy-involved shooting continued Monday. Three deputies remained on administrative leave pending the investigation. The man’s identity was expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office after his family was notified.

The Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called about 11 a.m. Sunday to the 4300 block of Marconi Avenue in Arden Arcade and found the man sleeping behind a liquor store on Eastern Avenue with a handgun on his lap.

Deputies awakened the man by sounding a car horn, then told him to stand so they could safely detain him. The man briefly picked up the gun before placing it on the ground beside him.

“They continued to try to give him commands and directives to come back peacefully, however, he failed to follow directives, turning toward the deputies and reaching down,” Sacramento County Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Edward Igoe said.

Three deputies then opened fire, striking the man. Deputies immediately provided medical aid before he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Igoe said.

The shooting occurred near where a woman told deputies late Saturday that the man had pointed a gun at her and her husband and fired, sheriff’s officials said Monday. Neither was injured.

Sheriff’s officials said the man also had been arrested by deputies in June at the same intersection where Sunday’s fatal shooting occurred. In that incident, deputies said, the man pointed a gun at a couple but did not fire.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon involving a firearm, and deputies recovered a gun at the scene.
