A car fatally struck a bear in a collision Friday morning on Interstate 80 near Truckee, but driver and passengers escaped injury, California Highway Patrol dispatchers said.

The car struck the animal about 7:30 a.m. on westbound I-80 near the central Truckee offramp, according to dispatch logs. The bear was killed in the collision. The driver was able to pull over to the shoulder and call for help.

Emergency responders briefly stopped westbound traffic to remove the bear, estimated to be at least 200 pounds, from the interstate. Those inside the car were uninjured, but the vehicle sustained front-end damage from the force of the collision, the CHP said.
