Pick the Preps: Whitney-Folsom, Jesuit-Del Oro, DCA-Antelope among top HS games

What gives with the weather?

Here comes Summer barging back into the picture, and we’re six weeks into the Sacramento-area high school football scene with homecoming games dotting the menu.

We have one more hot week of practices and games before — we assume, we hope — the temperatures dip. The league races are already hotly contested, and here we go with another week of showdowns, including two in the Sierra Foothill League, one in the Metro League, one in the Foothill Valley League and one in the Capital Valley Conference.

This is our final Pick the Preps roundtable this season for The Sacramento Bee as the sports department will be discontinued starting Oct. 10. I will continue the regional coverage crunch at Abridged-PBS KVIE in Sacramento.

Our Pick the Preps crew includes yours truly and NFHS livestreaming voices via ABC JAM Productions in Matthew Bessette and Scott Tedmon.

No. 7 Jesuit (5-1) at No. 4 Del Oro (4-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

On air: NFHS

JoeD: This one figures to be fierce, and a player to look for is Chase Carmazzi. You’ll find him on the field as a big-play defensive back for Del Oro, and his late interception sealed a Del Oro win at Jesuit last season. That same night, Carmazzi’s famed grandfather, Dan Carmazzi, was inducted into the Jesuit sports Hall of Fame as a 200-game winning football coach. Del Oro wins, 24-21.

MatthewB: Both teams are trying to bounce back from tough SFL road losses. Del Oro had a bye week to get back on track, and the Golden Eagles get it done, 28-24.

CoachT: This is a banger of a matchup with the winner staying alive for a shot at the SFL title. This one goes down to the bare-knuckle wire with the Golden Eagles taking home the gold. Del Oro wins, 17-16.

No. 6 Whitney (5-0) at No. 1 Folsom (6-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

On air: NFHS

JoeD: After several lean seasons, the Whitney Wildcats now officially stand as a contender in the SFL and the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs, thanks to the program’s best start since 2008, a credit to first-year coach Brian Brickey and staff. A win, or even a spirited battle against Folsom will resonate. Folsom will for this game welcome back UCLA-bound WR Rob Larson, who has not played this season because of a hamstring injury. Folsom wins, 30-21.

MatthewB: This is the only game between two unbeaten teams in the entire section. I don’t think anybody had that on their Bbingo card. Folsom wins it, 42-31.

CoachT: Whitney has been questioned all year and has come up with all the answers. The Wildcats are legit, but there’s no answer for what the Bulldogs bring. Folsom wins, 38-21

No. 8 Destiny Christian (5-0) at Antelope (3-2)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

On air: NFHS

JoeD: The Metro League includes powerhouse Grant, Destiny Christian Academy, Antelope and West Park. The DCA-Grant game looms on Oct. 16, and the Lions can ill afford a stumble here. Antelope first-year coach and 234-game winner Terry Stark features the tricky Wing-T rushing attack, big on misdirection and deception. DCA wins 20-17.

MatthewB: This should be a fun one between two teams with contrasting styles. Destiny wins, 17-14.

CoachT: With Coach Stark at the helm for Antelope, the future is bright. At DCA, the present is even brighter. Lions roar to victory, 24-20.

No. 15 Yuba City (5-1) at Roseville (2-3)

When: 7:15 p.m. Friday

JoeD: The Honkers have five blowout victories and one frustrating loss, a 10-9 setback to Destiny Christian on Sept. 11. Roseville is a defending section champion that started 2-0 but has lost three straight, including back-to-back shutouts. Yuba City wins, 20-19.

MatthewB: Outside of Whitney, there might not be a better story this football season than Yuba City. Roseville has hit a rough and will look to get right in the FVL where the Tigers lost just once last season. The Honkers take it, 28-21.

CoachT: Honk if you love the Honkers. I’m leaning on my horn as Yuba City beats Roseville, 27-24.

Vista del Lago (2-3) at Christian Brothers (2-4)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

JoeD: The Eagles of Folsom have had a lot of fine quarterbacks since the program started in 2007, and the latest is junior Jacoby More (15 total touchdowns). CB is led by Gunnar Marsh, a super senior who has 14 total scores, including 13 touchdown grabs from Omar Johnson. CB wins, 40-35.

MatthewB: This should be an exciting one with both teams boasting potent passing attacks. Falcons over Eagles, 42-35.

CoachT: Both teams are better than their records show. In a high scoring battle between majestic birds, CB’s Falcons soar over VDL’s Eagles, 48-45.
