Rece Davis may not control where College GameDay goes on a weekly basis, but he certainly knows where he’d LIKE the show to go in a few weeks from now.

On the latest episode of the College GameDay Podcast, Davis said that he “needs” North Dakota State to beat UNLV this weekend. He said that a win in that game would set up a potential game in New Mexico against the Lobos in Week 8 that could be “really, really attractive.”
“I need North Dakota State to win this game,” Davis said. “We don’t root. We don’t root for teams. Pete [Thamel] says this often. We root for the story. They got a game in New Mexico in a couple of weeks. That could be really, really attractive.”
The obvious implication is that if both North Dakota State and New Mexico win their games leading up to their October 24 clash, College GameDay might make a first-ever trip to Albuquerque for a show. It’s been two years since GameDay went to a brand new campus and Davis seems to be itching at the opportunity to get a new experience.
“I’m not saying GameDay is going there, but I’m not saying it’s not,” he said. “So I need North Dakota State to win this game. Need New Mexico to keep winning.”
Bison vs. Lobos
North Dakota State are in their first season of FBS football, having joined the Mountain West Conference this year and have quickly shown that they belong at the level. They’re 5-0 on the season, have scored at least 28 points in every game and have only allowed one foe to score more than 10 points on them. The longtime FCS powerhouse is adapting well to their new position as an FBS team.

History is a little less kind to New Mexico, who have just a handful of winning seasons in the last 20 years and endured eight straight losing seasons between 2017 and 2024. That changed with the arrival of head coach Jason Eck in 2025. Eck led the team to a 9-3 regular season record last year – their best since 1997 – and currently has the team sitting comfortably at 4-1, with their only loss coming against a ranked Oklahoma team on the road.
