Is This a Trap Game for Vikings Against the Saints?

The Vikings have a perfect 4-0 record while the New Orleans Saints are 1-3 and have one of the worst defensive teams in the league. This game has all the makings of a trap game in the NFL.

One might think the majority of the players on the Vikings can’t wait to get this game over because Minnesota has its bye week coming up. Plans are made with families to take a brief respite from the hard-hitting world of the NFL that has been going at full speed since the teams reported for training camp at the end of July.

But when the undefeated team also has the worst passing game in the NFL, there is no taking any opponent for granted. There is no belief in the Vikings locker room that merely showing up at the Superdome to take on Tyler Shough and the Saints will be an easy win.

The Vikings have hard work to do. They are hoping to get their offense on track for the first time this season. There have been a couple of positive moments, including the fourth quarter of the season opener against the Packers when they roared from behind to defeat Green Bay by double digits with backup QB Carson Wentz under center.

He was there because Kyler Murray went out of the game early with a concussion. Murray returned in Week 3 against the Buccaneers, but star wideout Justin Jefferson sprained his ankle in the first quarter and the offense did little without him.

Vikings offense came to life against winless Miami

That remained the case in Week 4 against the winless Miami Dolphins until the fourth quarter. Suddenly, Murray developed a rapport with TE T.J. Hockenson and the offense was able to hold the ball for 8:30 in the final quarter at a time that allowed the Vikings to regain control of the game.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell may have Jefferson back for this game and he is hoping the offense can finally get on track.

The Vikings have been spectacular on defense and special teams, but unless the offense makes timely contributions, any championship aspirations would have to be considered folly. The Vikings need to be a complete team, and they must start to show the offense can contribute.

There will be no taking of the Saints lightly and a trap game does not apply. If the Vikings end up losing this game, it won’t be because they underestimated Shough, Chris Olave and the Saints.

It will be the result of an offense that failed to contribute once again.
