Although it’s not official just yet, the MLB is getting ready for a lockout this winter.

The MLB’s current collective bargaining agreement will expire after Dec. 1. Obviously, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred wants to avoid having a lockout that impacts the 2027 season. At the end of the day though, the debate over whether or not the league needs a salary cap could linger for several months.
In the meantime, Evan Drellich in The Athletic is reporting that the MLB plans on scrubbing player images from their official website and other channels during the lockout. While this may sound extreme, the league did this during the previous work stoppage five years ago.
The MLB’s digital team has been advised to “create an alternate version of all club websites and other MLB-controlled websites from which all players’ likenesses have been eliminated consistent with these rules.”
What’s the latest on a new CBA?
During the latest bargaining session, the MLB proposed cutting the regular-season schedule to 154 games. Its proposal included a bizarre clause where the higher seeds in the playoffs get to choose their opponents.

If we rewind back to May, the MLBPA’s proposal included a “competitive-integrity tax” for teams that don’t spend $150 million. The league, meanwhile, countered the union’s offer with a “hard cap-and-floor system.” Of course, that didn’t sit well with the players.
“The suggestion that the only way to limit roster churn, or incentivize earlier Free Agent signings is with a salary cap is entirely unserious,” the MLBPA said in its statement. “Players have proposed changes that would address these priorities, but the league is not interested in any changes that don’t directly reduce the rights of all players and shift leverage to the owners.”
While it’s possible the two sides work out a new CBA sooner than later, it sounds like they’re nowhere close to a deal right now.
