Black Lily Naturals has its grand opening scheduled for the afternoon of Nov. 14 at its new home at 1700 I St.

Owner Chandra Stewart said she started her business in 2013, creating hair oils and other products using whipped shea butter. Two years later, she decided to try candle making. After purchasing her first kit, her love for the craft “blossomed from there,” she said.

Stewart set up at the midtown Farmer’s Market in 2019.

“I started selling and building relationships with people in the community, other businesses in the community (too),” Stewart said. “Now we’re in a brick-and-mortar.”

Originally from south Sacramento, Stewart said her career in candle making can be linked to her mother. She grew up with a “crafty mom” spending time at crafting fairs, which inspired her to be an entrepreneur, she said.

While Stewart considers herself a candle maker first, Black Lily Naturals also offers fragrances, incense and personal care products such as body oils, body butter and sugar scrubs. The store will also have a DIY candle making bar for customers.

A glance at Black Lily Naturals’ website lists a range of candles with evocative labels such as Baltic Forest with the scents of cedar, oak and lavender. Others include California Coast with a sea salt, linen and moss fragrance and Life & Lemons with an aroma of citrus, musk and green tea.

Another choice, Weekend Cartoons, carries a bit of nostalgia with it, according to the product description. The candle smells of cereal, milk and lemon and is intended to recall the days of watching Saturday morning cartoons and summer.
