Krasnyi Oktyabr’s recall notice said New York State Department and Markets discovered the possibility of listeria in lot No. D139149161-153 of Starfish Seafood Trio — Cold Smoked Salmon, Halibut, Trout. The 8-ounce vacuum-sealed packs with a Dec. 1, 2027 expiration date went to distributors in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, Georgia and Massachusetts.

Listeria infects about 1,250 people in the United States annually, according to the CDC, and kills about 172 of those people. Adults over 65, newborns and people with damaged immune systems are most vulnerable to listeria’s worst effects. The high fevers brought on by listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women who are infected. Most people will feel as if they have the flu, along with headaches and muscle stiffness.
