The problem with being thought of as a “generational” NFL prospect before you ever take a snap in college football is that eventually, you have to live up to it.

The problem with having the last name of Manning… is pretty much the same thing.
Through the first five games of Texas’ 2026 season, quarterback Arch Manning is as complex an NFL prospect as he’s ever been. It has not been a straight path to greatness, and in No. 1 Texas’ 27-24 loss to the unranked Oklahoma Sooners, Manning did not look ready for prime time a lot of the time.
Manning completed 19 of 31 passes in the game for 260 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 93.5. Fair play to the Sooners, whose pass defense ranks seventh in the FBS with 150.0 passing yards per game allowed — they did a fine job of matching Manning’s receivers and muddying his reads through most of the game. Oklahoma created several defensive structures that left Manning trying to figure things out, to no avail.

Manning did have his share of big-time throws because he does have a talent for them. His 41-yard touchdown pass to receiver Cam Coleman (a star in his own right) with 6:56 left in the first quarter was placed perfectly over the head of cornerback Trystan Haynes, and this was just one of several plays where, were you an NFL evaluator, you could convince yourself that you could build your franchise around this guy. All three of Manning’s touchdown passes showed velocity, timing, and decisiveness.

Overall, though, the problems with Manning’s next-level prospects showed up in this game, and not for the first time. At this point in his development, he is not an anticipation thrower — more of a “see it and throw it” guy, and while you can succeed to a point in the pros without the understanding of how to throw your receivers open, it requires a lot of schematic frosting. More than you would want from a first overall pick in any draft.
Manning is also vulnerable to pressure. This season, he’s thrown two of his touchdowns and two of his interceptions when disrupted, and his passer rating when clean (101.9) drops to 72.4 when under duress. More often than not, Manning will drop the ball off to his underneath first read, or try something of a more vertical nature that probably shouldn’t happen. This season, Manning has been at his worst when throwing the ball 20 or more air yards downfield, completing 9 of 22 such passes for 315 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions, and a passer rating of 79.0. Deep throws are always more high-risk propositions, but if your quarterback can’t make opposing defenses pay with the deep ball, that’s another problem.

Manning’s game-sealing interception with 19 seconds remaining? That was another problem. The Sooners went with an overload blitz to Manning’s front side, and Manning tried to hit Coleman on a 12-yard comeback route to keep the drive going, but pressure impacted the throw, and cornerback Courtland Guillory read the route perfectly to end things.

“It’s obviously a level of disappointment,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said postgame. “There’s a level of anger and frustration, because we know we have issues that need to be fixed, and we’re working on those issues, and trying to get them fixed.”
Manning isn’t Texas’ only problem, but if he’s headed for the 2027 draft, Saturday showed how much work remains.
