DaVon Hamilton’s Redemption Snap Saved the Day, and 3 Other Takeaways From Jaguars’ Win

The Jacksonville Jaguars won a game in London on Sunday that they spent most of the afternoon trying to give away. They outgained the Philadelphia Eagles 408-232, held them to 22 rushing yards and still needed Cam Little’s 57-yard field goal on the final play to win 19-17.

The Jaguars are 4-1 and have won 12 of their last 13 regular-season games. They also went 0 for 3 in the red zone, committed 13 penalties and didn’t force a turnover for the first time this season against an undermanned Eagles team missing Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith. Here are four things that stood out before Jacksonville stays in England for a second straight game next week.

DaVon Hamilton got his redemption snap

Ross Matiscik, a Pro Bowl long snapper in each of the last three seasons, hurt his shoulder on a first-quarter punt and didn’t return. That put defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton over the ball for the rest of the day. After Parker Washington’s 27-yard touchdown put the Jaguars ahead 16-14 with 3:20 left, Hamilton’s extra-point snap was off and Cam Little’s kick went wide left. Jake Elliott’s 48-yard field goal put Philadelphia ahead 17-16 with eight seconds to go.

Ameer Abdullah returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards, and Hamilton’s last snap of the day was clean. Little hit from 57 yards on the final play. Hamilton had handled five snaps in relief last November, according to Yahoo Sports, and the Jaguars needed every bit of that practice on a snap with no margin for error.

Liam Coen’s aggressiveness at the 1 nearly cost the Jaguars

Down 14-7 on the final play of the first half, Coen went for it on fourth-and-1 from the 1 instead of kicking. Zack Baun stopped Bhayshul Tuten. In the fourth quarter, Brenton Strange’s 27-yard catch set up first-and-goal at the 1, and the Jaguars again came away with nothing after a series slowed by delay-of-game penalties ended with an incompletion on fourth-and-goal from the 5, according to the Eagles’ game log.

A field goal before halftime would have made the final minutes look very different. Coen’s results in his second season have earned him some benefit of the doubt, but two empty trips from the 1 against a depleted Eagles team will draw questions this week.

Parker Washington is the go-to receiver

Washington caught six passes for 124 yards and both touchdowns, a 51-yard catch-and-run off a bootleg and the one-handed 27-yard go-ahead score. He was targeted a team-high nine times. He now leads the Jaguars with 22 catches for 352 yards and four touchdowns.

Brian Thomas Jr. was targeted three times without a catch. Whatever the plan for the receiver room was in August, Washington is the one Lawrence trusts in big moments now.

The defense won without a takeaway

Lawrence said this week, “I feel strongly if we can win the turnover margin, we can win the game,” according to the team’s website. The Jaguars lost it 1-0, with Quinyon Mitchell intercepting Lawrence in the third quarter, and won anyway because the defense controlled the line of scrimmage.

Philadelphia averaged 1.2 yards per carry, went 6 of 15 on third down and was stopped on fourth down twice, once when Travis Hunter broke up a pass at the Jacksonville 43. The only real damage came on Darius Cooper’s 62-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. Foye Oluokun led the defense with 10 tackles.
