The Giants (3-1-1) picked up a half-game on both the Cowboys and Eagles amid rainy conditions in Landover, Maryland, thanks to quarterback Jameis Winston’s excellent performance. Winston went 33 for 54 for 326 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to Isaiah Likely.

Winston also found Malik Nabers for the game-tying score late in the fourth quarter that forced overtime.

Dominic Zvada missed three field goals, and running back Cam Skattebo lost a crucial fumble in overtime with the Giants in field-goal range.

Mistakes Doom Giants, Commanders in Overtime

Skattebo’s fumbling woes have been a topic all season, and they showed up at the worst possible time Sunday. The Giants’ starting running back shredded Washington’s defense on what looked like their game-winning drive, going 32 yards on three carries and pushing the Giants to the Washington 24-yard line.

But Skattebo coughed up the ball on first-and-10, and Washington’s Shy Tuttle recovered. The Commanders appeared to have the game in the bag when they moved the ball to the Giants’ 26-yard line, but Jayden Daniels took a crucial sack on what became the game’s final play, and the Giants pulled out the tie.

Giants fans can exhale about the tie, especially since New York didn’t lead at all Sunday. But Skattebo and Winston both lost fumbles, and Zvada’s three misses were his first of the season.

Zvada had the chance to put the Giants ahead on their first overtime drive, but he badly hooked a 46-yard attempt.

Winston Heats Up

Winston appeared to be in danger of losing his starting job during the first half, when he went 7 of 16 for 72 yards and lost a fumble. The Giants trailed 12-3 at halftime, and that advantage ballooned to 27-13 in the fourth quarter after Daniels recorded his second rushing touchdown of the game with 11:05 left.

But Winston willed the Giants back, using Nabers and Likely, while going 26 of 38 for 254 yards in the second half and overtime.

Nabers finished the game with 20 targets, and Winston targeted Likely 13 times, as New York exploited mismatches against the porous Washington pass defense.

Winston hit Nabers for the game-tying score, a 17-yard floating throw with 1:43 left in regulation. The two hooked up again for a 28-yard completion in overtime that put the Giants in Washington territory before Skattebo’s fumble

A week after Nabers called for more second-half targets, he had 16 in the second half and overtime, finishing with 11 catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. Likely posted 11 catches for 94 yards and two scores.
