No one could be harder on Cam Skattebo than the New York Giants running back was on himself after his crucial fumble nearly cost them Sunday.

Skattebo’s fumbling woes took center stage again in the Giants’ 27-27 tie against the Washington Commanders on Sunday at Northwest Stadium.
Skattebo finished with 13 carries for 59 yards and two receptions for 12 yards. He also helped set the Giants up in field goal range with about two minutes left in overtime by rushing 32 yards on three carries.
Cam Skattebo Crushed Himself After the Giants’ Tie
The Giants had pushed the ball to the Washington 24-yard line and were planning to send out rookie kicker Dominic Zvada for a potential game-winning kick on third down.
“Strategically, the idea was to run it twice and run it down and get as close as we could and protect the football, which we talked about numerous times,” Giants coach John Harbaugh said. “Skatt played a hell of a game, but he’s going to have to learn from that.”
Skattebo hadn’t lost a fumble this season until Sunday, and the soggy conditions surely were at least partially to blame. But that didn’t stop the second-year running back from beating himself up after the game.
“At the end of the day, I have to take care of the ball,” Skattebo said. “All the other 52 guys and all the coaching staff trust me to have the ball there in the end. I’ve gotta step up and make the play. It’s as simple as that.
“I gotta hold on to the ball and make sure these guys know that when my name’s called, we’re gonna be OK.”

Skattebo now leads tall running backs in fumbles (4). Perhaps due to concerns about his ball security, he ceded carries to reserve running back Najee Harris throughout the game.
“There’s 11 guys on the other team who are screaming at you, telling you you messed up, it’s your fault,” Skattebo said. “My number was called. I gave the ball up.”
The Commanders Offense Bailed Out Cam Skattebo
Not only did the Skattebo fumble cost the Giants a shot a game-winning field goal, it gave Washington one final chance to win the game.
The Commanders took over at their own 23-yard line and went 51 yards on their first four plays. Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels’ 13-yard completion to Treylon Burks set up the Commanders at the 26-yard line with less than a minute remaining in overtime.
But Daniels’ critical gaffe, where he let the clock run out after taking a sack with Washington out of timeouts, took the focus off Skattebo’s fumble.
“It was a sigh of relief,” Skattebo said. “I probably won’t get reamed that much, even though I’ll probably still get reamed.”
