John Harbaugh: Giants’ Injured Starters ‘Have a Chance’ to Play vs. Saints

The New York Giants got bit by the injury bug again in their 27-27 tie against the Washington Commanders on Sunday. But according to head coach John Harbaugh, none of the injuries are worrisome.

Despite leaving Sunday’s game early, Giants right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor, cornerback Colton Hood and safety Tyler Nubin each has a chance to play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, according to Harbaugh.

Eluemunor left the game in the third quarter with a calf injury, and Nubin exited with a neck injury during the fourth quarter. Each is considered day-to-day, according to Harbaugh.

Hood sustained a concussion and will have to clear the NFL’s concussion protocol to suit up against New Orleans.

John Harbaugh: Tyler Nubin, Jermaine Eluemunor, Colton Hood ‘Have a Chance’ to Play Against New Orleans

Marcus Mbow filled in admirably for Eluemunor, but two plays after Ar’Darius Washington took over for Nubin, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels ran 26 yards for a touchdown that put the Commanders ahead 27-13 with 11:05 to play.

So even though the Giants deploy a next-man-up mentality, having starters is preferable, and each injured player has a shot to suit up against New Orleans.

“They’ll have a chance for the game,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll just have to see how it goes throughout the course of the week.”

Eluemunor is the biggest potential loss, since he is having an standout season. The right tackle has the sixth-best pass-blocking grade (81.3) among 72 qualifying tackles, according to Pro Football Focus, and has the 20th-best overall grade (72.4) through five weeks.

With Eluemunor’s injury, both Giants tackles are banged up, since left tackle Andrew Thomas is nursing a groin injury. Harbaugh lauded Thomas’ ability to play through pain after the left tackle labored through a groin injury to play all 89 snaps Sunday.

“I think he’s doing a really good job of just playing through whatever he’s got,” Harbaugh said. “It may be laboring for him, but still the result is better than almost every player in the league at that position. So, I feel like he’s playing at a really high level still (and) doing a great job. Just tough as nails. Nothing but respect for him.”

John Harbaugh Gives Update on Giants’ Defensive Back Injuries

The Giants’ secondary has been ravaged by injuries, and Nubin has been at the center of those. The starter missed the Giants’ 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 27 with a calf strain, and his status is important since his backup, Jason Pinnock, missed Sunday’s game with a concussion.

Having a healthy secondary is imperative against the Saints, who lead the NFL in passing attempts (205) and are 12th in the league in pass offense (240.2 yards per game). But there could be reinforcements on the way.

Harbaugh said starting cornerback Greg Newsome II is “fine” after he briefly left Sunday’s game with an injury. Plus, the Giants can open cornerback Paulson Adebo’s 21-day return window, since he has been on injured reserve for the requisite four weeks.

If Adebo can return, that would give the Giants three more-than-serviceable cornerbacks, plus nickelback Dru Phillips, who has played very well this season. But Harbaugh ducked a question about whether the Giants will bring Adebo back to practice this week.
