Packers Biggest Question Heading into Week 6 Following Win Over Bears

It wasn’t a perfect day, but the offensive line took another favorable step in the Green Bay Packers‘ 31-7 win over the Chicago Bears in Week 5. After a historically bad start for the unit, changes were made, leading to significant improvement and two straight victories.

After such a disjointed start to the season, it’s fair to ask if the line’s progress is what will finally allow the Packers offense to take off.

Continued Improvement In Week 5

After adding Laken Tomlinson and Travis Glover to the starting lineup, the Packers’ offensive line looked like a functioning group for the first time in a 17-14 Week 4 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Against the Bears, they were arguably better.

On Sunday, the line allowed only six pressures, including two sacks, two hurries, and two quarterback hits. That allowed the offense to actually operate, posting 31 points in a game Green Bay was favored to lose.

Entering Week 5, Jordan Love had the least amount of time to throw and had been hit more than any other quarterback in the NFL. With protection from the o-line, he had a career day against the Bears, finishing 25-of-31 for 367 yards and two touchdowns.

More Help On The Way?

Tomlinson has been a welcome addition at left guard, but the Packers may soon plug in another veteran on the opposite side in Kevin Zeitler. Signed ahead of Week 4, the former Pro Bowler has been slowly but surely getting back into the swing of things, and could be ready to start in Week 6.

Leading up to the Packers’ matchup with the Bears, Zeitler took some first-team reps during practice. However, come game time, Glover got the start at right guard.

In consecutive starts, Glover has been serviceable and an upgrade over the injured Jacob Monk. However, he did receive the worst offensive grade (42.6) on the Packers in Week 5.

On Monday, head coach Matt LaFleur said Zeitler could have played against the Bears if needed. This Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys might be the perfect time for him to debut, giving Green Bay another boost along the offensive line.
