There was a time not all that long ago when App State vs Coastal Carolina was one of the most interesting games on the college football slate.
The 2021 Coastal Carolina team went 11-2 – one of the two losses was in a 30-27 thriller to App State. The 2019 App State team went 13-1, with the 56-37 win over the Chanticleers a wild early battle. This time around, both teams are trying to stay alive in the Sun Belt East race.
App State lost its last two games after a 3-0 start, dropping the home date to Old Dominion 10-3 last week. Coastal Carolina started 1-4, but won at Marshall last week for the first win against an FBS team under new head coach Ryan Beard.
With James Madison and Georgia State rolling in the Sun Belt East, the loser of this is realistically out of the conference title chase.

Why App State Will Win
Coastal Carolina isn’t slowing down anyone’s passing game. It gave up over 220 yards through the air and multiple touchdowns in each of the last four games.
App State is coming off a brutal offensive game against Old Dominion – a horrendous rainstorm had everything to do with that – but in the first four games, Malachi Singleton was one of the nation’s hottest passers, averaging over 300 yards over the four games with seven touchdowns. After the problems against ODU, he should pick it back up this week.
Why Coastal Carolina Will Win
Coastal Carolina’s defense has to take the ball away in bunches.
Marshall is far better than the Chanticleers, so how did they pull off the win last week on the road? The Coastal Carolina defense forced six takeaways.
It came up with four takeaways in the team’s other win against Fordham, and stayed alive against a Liberty offense that rolled at will thanks to two takeaways. Again, the weather was the problem, but App State turned it over three times last week and had to battle against a miserable Charlotte team a few weeks earlier thanks to two turnovers.
