As Aztecs evaluate lineup, backup QB upgraded from ‘out’ to ‘questionable’

San Diego State’s Pac-12 Availability Report posted Wednesday night for this weekend’s game against Fresno State includes 18 players listed as “questionable.”

Among them are three starters on the offensive line – left tackle Joe Borjon, left guard Kalan Ellis and right guard Mikey Watkins – along with running backs Lucky Sutton and Javion Kinnard and linebacker Sione Hala.

Another notable name: backup quarterback Stone Saunders.

Saunders was listed as out the past two weeks as he recovers from a broken collarbone suffered in the season opener against Portland State. There has been increasing interest in the status of Saunders, a redshirt freshman who transferred from Kentucky over the winter, given the struggles this season of SDSU starting quarterback Jayden Denegal.

A recovery time of six to eight weeks is typical for a broken collarbone. It has been five weeks since Saunders had surgery. He returned to practice last week, but has not yet been cleared to play in a game. Saunders is expected to have scans this week to determine whether he is recovered enough to be cleared to play.

SDSU coach Sean Lewis said after Wednesday morning’s practice that scans had not yet been completed.

So when?

“I know, but there’s not really a competitive advantage for me to say when that’s going to happen,” Lewis said, adding, “There’s a lot of ifs and whats and buts in that. We’ll see.”

Sutton has been back at practice this week running with the first team after missing the past two weeks (and three games overall) with a high ankle sprain.

“He’s been able to do a little bit more throughout the course of the week,” said Lewis, who expects Sutton to be a game-time decision against the Bulldogs.

Linebacker Tano Letuli has left each of the past two games with injuries and was listed as doubtful, along with starting wide receivers Donovan Brown and Nate Acevedo and running back Josiah Lucas.
