When the Rams assembled the latest superteam this offseason, with All-Pro-caliber talent throughout the roster, nobody expected them to be 2-3 five weeks in.

Kay Adams, however, is not worried. She believes the Rams will go on a run and win out, pointing to numbers that show how prolific their offense and stingy their defense have been, even without key players on both sides of the ball.
“The Rams have the No. 1 total offense in the league, the No. 3 total defense, and that 140 number is freaking insane,” Adams said Wednesday on “Up and Adams.” “They’re outgaining opponents by 140 yards per game. That 2-3 is bull[expletive]. That yardage differential is currently the greatest we’ve seen in the last 50 years. Greater than the ’07 undefeated Patriots and the Steel Curtain Steelers. The special teams is a problem. They need to cut out some of those poorly timed turnovers. I get it. But rest assured, did you see the numbers? It’s going to balance out at some point. I trust the math.”
Rams have been beating themselves
Adams is spot on. The Rams’ record isn’t due to poor play on offense or defense. It’s mostly due to mistakes that cost them games. They blew a 16-point lead in a 30-26 loss to the Broncos, committing five critical penalties in the last two minutes, which is tied for the most by any team in a game since 2000.

Another example came in Monday’s 37-34 overtime loss to the Bills, when Harrison Mevis’ potential game-winning 48-yard field goal attempt was blocked after he missed a 50-yard try earlier. Coach Sean McVay drew plenty of warranted criticism for putting the game in a struggling kicker’s hands instead of Matthew Stafford’s and an offense that had 454 total yards. McVay later admitted he was too conservative on that drive.
The good news is the Rams are already addressing their special teams problems. They released Mevis on Tuesday and signed Blake Grupe off the Jets’ practice squad.
Outgaining opponents by such a margin while dealing with injuries to key players shows the Rams will be fine. They just need to clean up the errors. If not for those, the Rams would only have one loss, the Week 1 defeat to the 49ers in Australia.
