It was probably a miserable film study session for the Cleveland Browns’ offensive line after they surrendered eight sacks against the New York Jets. Things aren’t getting any easier, either, as Trey Hendrickson returned to practice Wednesday after missing two games with a finger injury. The Ravens have already demonstrated an ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks, and Hendrickson’s potential return could make life even more difficult for a Browns offense that struggled to keep its quarterback upright.

An Exploitable Line
To make matters worse for Cleveland, Tytus Howard, Teven Jenkins, and Elgton Jenkins are all dealing with injuries that either limited them or kept them out of Wednesday’s practice. Their potential absences could create favorable matchups for Hendrickson, who has impressed despite missing time this season. According to NFL Pro, he has generated a 21.3% quarterback pressure rate, the second-highest of his career.
Hendrickson could be moved around the defensive front to exploit favorable matchups, much like an NBA star using a screen to get a matchup that he likes. One potential target is Tytus Howard, whose 65.1 pass-blocking grade ranks 48th among 72 qualifying tackles, according to Pro Football Focus. He has also surrendered 14 pressures and two sacks this season.

Even if Howard cannot play, Cleveland could find itself in an equally difficult situation, with a backup tackle potentially tasked with containing a Pro Bowl-caliber edge rusher. The Ravens already rank 12th in pressure rate, according to NFL Savant, and with Cleveland’s offensive line dealing with several injuries, Hendrickson’s potential return could make an already dangerous pass rush even more difficult to contain.
