League Evaluators Reveal Marvin Harrison Jr. Was Worth a Fourth-Round Pick Before Texans Trade

The Houston Texans acquired Harrison and a 2027 sixth-round pick from the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a 2027 second-round pick and a seventh-rounder. The deal gives Arizona a valuable Day 2 selection, while Houston takes a gamble on a former No. 4 overall pick whose NFL production has not matched his draft status.

ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler said that several league evaluators believed Harrison was worth closer to a fourth-round pick because of his declining production and inconsistent involvement in Arizona’s passing game. The Indianapolis Colts reportedly explored the situation but considered the asking price too high. The Kansas City Chiefs had monitored the receiver market but were not viewed as serious contenders. Houston’s willingness to meet Arizona’s second-round asking price may have left the Texans with little meaningful competition.

In four games with Arizona this season, he recorded five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. His rookie campaign in 2024 was stronger, with 62 receptions for 885 yards and eight touchdowns. Those numbers fell to 41 catches, 608 yards and four touchdowns in 2025.

Regardless, Harrison is due approximately $4 million in 2026 and $5.62 million in 2027, with Houston also facing a decision on his fifth-year option. His rookie contract gives Houston time to evaluate him, but the second-round pick raises the stakes. The price will look reasonable if Harrison rediscovers his college form.

C.J. Stroud Gets a New Weapon as Texans Bet on Their Quarterback

Through five games, Stroud has completed 119 of 185 passes (64.3%) for 1,402 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions. He declined to pursue a new contract this summer, choosing to bet on himself in his fourth NFL season. If he maintains this level of efficiency and leads a turnaround, he could strengthen his position in future extension negotiations.

The two starred together at Ohio State in 2021 and 2022, earning All-American honors in 2022. Stroud knows Harrison’s work ethic and receiving ability, while Harrison believes their shared understanding of defensive coverages could speed up their connection. Houston still has Nico Collins, a proven target when healthy, alongside Kayshon Boutte, Jaylin Noel and Xavier Hutchinson.

With Jayden Higgins sidelined by a torn ACL, Harrison’s arrival adds depth and another potential big-play threat. Houston faces Jacksonville at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, October 18. Before the game, Houston needs to improve its running game, which has averaged just 3.3 yards per carry. A stronger ground attack would take pressure off Stroud and give Harrison more opportunities against defenses forced to respect multiple threats.
