Curry will play, but Warriors still dealing with injuries ahead of season opener

LOS ANGELES — Steph Curry should be good to go for Wednesday’s season opener at the Lakers, but the same is not a certainty for two of his teammates.

Brandin Podziemski did not practice for the second consecutive day, coach Steve Kerr told reporters at Chase Center on Tuesday morning. Podziemski tweaked his back in on Sunday and is considered questionable. The fourth-year guard recently signed a five-year extension and gained a reputation as an iron man last season. He played in all 82 games as one of the few certainties in an otherwise haphazard lineup.

Backup center Charles Bassey has been dealing with right knee tendinitis and also sat out practice. Like Podziemski, he is questionable for the opener. If Bassey cannot play, Kerr said that the big man rotation will be a mixture of Draymond Green, Al Horford and rookies Yaxel Lendeborg and Graham Ike. Kristaps Porzingis is still out indefinitely with an undisclosed health issue.

“Every game will be a little different depending on who is available … but we feel like we have a lot of depth to work with,” Kerr said.

Kerr had more encouraging news when asked about his franchise player. Curry suffered a public injury scare at Sunday’s open practice, exiting midway after spraining his ankle.

However, he practiced each of the last two days and Kerr said that Curry is “ready to go” and is not expected to have any restrictions with playing time.

The Warriors have been cautious with Curry’s minutes this offseason, playing him only 23 minutes in the preseason finale after reworking his routine in order to preserve his right knee for the 82-game grind. Along with 36-year-old Green, Curry might not play back-to-back sets, of which the Warriors have 15 this season.

“It will be week to week, but we absolutely have to be mindful of our more experienced players in that regard,” Kerr said.
