Miami Dolphins Injury Update: Douglas and Savaiinaea Return on a Limited Basis

The Miami Dolphins began Jets week with encouraging movement from two injured offensive players. Rookie receiver Caleb Douglas and right guard Jonah Savaiinaea were limited participants in Monday’s informal practice, giving both a chance to increase their work when Miami opens its first official practice Wednesday.

Douglas has been sidelined by an ankle injury. Jeff Hafley expressed optimism about the receiver’s progress while acknowledging that Douglas will need to regain football rhythm after missing time. His return would add size and speed to a young group led by Malik Washington, Chris Bell and Kevin Coleman Jr. Douglas should not be assumed active until he completes the practice week without a setback.

Savaiinaea injured his ankle against Cincinnati and did not participate in the bye-week session. His limited Monday work is a positive step. Jarrett Kingston played well in relief and remains the logical replacement if Savaiinaea cannot start against a Jets defense built around pressure.

Cornerback JuJu Brents is recovering from the stinger he sustained against Cincinnati. Safety Michael Taaffe also has been monitored after a chest injury. Their availability would matter against a Jets receiver group that now includes Garrett Wilson and Omar Cooper Jr., who returned with 103 yards and a touchdown at New England.

Cornerback Reese Taylor, edge rusher Robert Beal Jr. and tight end Justin Joly remain on the watch list. Taylor has dealt with a quadriceps injury, Beal with a hamstring problem and Joly with a concussion. Joly must complete the league’s return-to-participation process before playing.

Miami also must decide whether to activate eligible players from reserve lists. Cornerbacks Storm Duck and Darrell Baker Jr., linebacker Ronnie Harrison Jr. and edge defender Trey Moore are among the possible reinforcements. Eligibility does not guarantee activation, but the Dolphins need depth at cornerback and along the edge.

De’Von Achane remains on injured reserve with a knee injury and is not expected to return this season. Gordon will continue as the lead back, with Jaylen Wright and Kaytron Allen behind him.

Monday’s work was informal, so it does not carry the same status as the official Wednesday report. That report will establish whether Douglas and Savaiinaea progressed, remained limited or suffered setbacks. It also will provide the first direct Dolphins-Jets comparison after New York played Sunday.

The early trend is favorable. Miami may regain a starting guard and a promising rookie receiver, but the secondary and edge rotation remain the areas most likely to shape Sunday’s roster decisions.
