The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday that it was investigating the officer-involved shooting on Fulton Ave near Michelle Drive.
Sheriff’s deputies were at the scene along with the Citrus Heights Police Department and the California Highway Patrol.
Sheriff’s officials said a suspect was taken by ambulance to a hospital. The suspect was listed in stable condition at the hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Sgt. Edward Igoe, a sheriff’s spokesperson, said the incident began shortly before noon along the Capital City Freeway. He said a CHP officer had pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation.
During the traffic stop, the suspect reportedly brandished a knife. Igoe said the armed suspect was being held at gunpoint by the CHP officer before the suspect got back in his vehicle and drove away. The CHP officer then initiated the vehicle pursuit.
The pursuit headed east onto Interstate 80 then headed south on Fulton Avenue, where Citrus Heights police joined the chase. Two CHP vehicles and one Citrus Heights vehicle were chasing the suspect vehicle at that point.
Igoe said the suspect vehicle then stopped on Fulton Avenue, where the suspect got out and started pacing back and forth with a knife in his hand in front of his vehicle.
A sheriff’s deputy arrived and pulled out a less-than-lethal shotgun to assist the officers confronting the armed suspect, Igoe said.
Igoe said the suspect then ran toward the officers. Igoe said two Citrus Heights police officers fired their department-issued weapon, and gunfire struck the suspect. He said the deputy fired one less-than-lethal round that struck the suspect.

Investigators found a knife at the shooting scene, Igoe said. No law enforcement officials at the scene were injured.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting, and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office was at the scene conducting an independent review.
The suspect was spotted in a white pickup with Oklahoma license plates leading CHP officers in the pursuit on Interstate 80, according to law enforcement dispatch audio recordings reviewed by The Sacramento Bee.
The CHP pursuit then headed south on Fulton Avenue from Auburn Boulevard. Shots were fired several minutes later.
The Bee reviewed video of the shooting captured by a bystander at the scene. The 30-second video shows a man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt after he apparently got out of the white pickup that was stopped in the middle of the street.
The man was standing near the white pickup as he confronted law enforcement officers with their guns drawn. The video shows the man walking near the front end of the white pickup with the officers standing several feet away. One officer can be heard telling the man, “Drop the knife, I don’t want to kill you.”
Moments later, the man ran toward the officers before gunshots were fired, and he fell forward to the ground.
Sheriff’s officials said some roads in the area were closed, including a stretch of Fulton Avenue near the scene of the shooting, and that drivers should expect significant traffic impacts and delays.
