A Senate committee on Tuesday advanced a resolution declaring California’s support of its current mail-in ballot system amid ongoing criticism by President Donald Trump about the state’s recent primary election.

The measure was a direct response to an executive order Trump signed in March that called for citizenship verification for federal elections and directed the United States Postal Service to only send mail-in ballots to people on a state-specific list. The action has been challenged in court.
The resolution’s author, Assemblymember Marc Berman, D-Menlo Park, also connected it to a string of unsubstantiated accusations Trump has made in the last week about California ballot counting.
“Notwithstanding the lies President Trump and his supporters have been spreading for over a decade, and especially in the last couple of days, the rate of mail voting fraud in California, and across the country, is miniscule and statistically insignificant,” Berman said. “Nevertheless, President Trump continues his all out assault on our democracy and on the fundamental right of Californians to participate in it.”
The resolution “would declare the Legislature’s opposition to any federal executive action that restricts, burdens, or interferes with California’s vote by mail system.” It has already passed the Assembly.
California has universal vote by mail system and state laws that aim to increase the number of ballots that are counted, including those that are postmarked on Election Day but received days later.
In response to a question about the resolution, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said in a statement: “Countless Americans share the same concerns as President Trump watching the way California conducts its elections, including taking weeks to deliver results. The President is committed to ensuring that Americans have full confidence in the administration of our elections.”

Trump has repeatedly alleged that Democrats have rigged the June 2 primary in their favor.
In a Truth Social post on Monday he said it was “Not possible for Spencer Pratt to have lost the L.A. runoffs after the big lead he had,” referring to news that the Los Angeles mayor candidate had not advanced to the November election. Pratt, a Republican, dropped out of second place as election officials continued to make their way through uncounted ballots.
Trump, in the post, continued: “3rd World Nation. Rigged Elections! Now they’ll be working on great guy Steve Hilton. Won’t have results for, possibly, TWO WEEKS, according to officials.”
Hilton, also a Republican and who was endorsed by Trump, is running for governor and Tuesday afternoon was projected to advance to the November election, according to the Associated Press.
When asked the president’s post, Hilton said his campaign had not yet seen anything that would give him a reason to intervene.
