Jason Ott knows. He’s the second-year football coach for the Bella Vista Broncos of the San Juan Unified School District. He is a graduate of the Fair Oaks school that for decades has been known for its academic standing and for a football team trying to navigate the treacherous high seas of high school football.
Bella Vista capped the 2025 season with a victory over Del Campo in the Battle of Fair Oaks, and they ignited this campaign with a satisfying 48-9 rout of Casa Roble of Orangevale last Friday in the annual Cowbell Classic. That effort marked Bella Vista’s first triumph over Casa Roble since 2012.
Who kept track? Ott did. What it means is continued building momentum as the Broncos seek their first non-losing season since going 5-5 in 2022 under coach Jim Gray and their first winning season since finishing 7-4 in 2009 under coach Matt Polston.
These Broncos are not to be confused with the BV teams that endured six years of continuous of defeat, punctuated by a Northern California record 48-game losing streak that ended in 2021.
Friday’s game at Bella Vista included a packed house and quite the post-game celebration.
“Yeah, it was awesome,” Ott said. “The boys deserved it. They’ve been working hard, and to beat Casa after not beating them in 14 years shows where the program is going.”
The coach continued, “The atmosphere was absolutely crazy. I said last year, ‘Can you imagine what this place will be like once we start winning?’ I think Friday night showed that. The kids showed that they can play with anybody, and also, the win shows the community that they don’t have to send their kids to other schools to play winning football.”
To that end, Ott said members of the Junior Broncos feeder program “were telling me they can’t wait to come to BV and play,” Ott said. “We haven’t heard that in a long time. I’m super proud of these boys, who bought into the weight room in January, and it showed as we have 38 kids on varsity.”
Jack Singley showed what he could do, too. The senior completed 17 of 20 passes for 213 yards and five touchdowns, three of them to 6-foot-4 receiver Christian Taylor. Dvaughn Norwood rushed for 90 yards after setting the school’s single-season rushing record in 2025 with 1,876 yards (and 25 touchdowns), bettering the mark of 1,656 set in 1974 by F.J. Carney.
Norwood is a known commodity at 6-foot and 205 pounds of effort. Singley is not, but that may change.

“Jack Singley is the most underrated quarterback in the section,” Ott said. “He showed Friday what he’s capable of, and with teams loading the box on defense to stop Dvaughn, he showed that you have to worry about our passing game, too. Jack is our leader, and he is the guy that’s breathe confidence in our program.”
Bella Vista (1-1) has an off-week bye on Friday and plays at Del Campo on Sept. 18, bouncing to a different step.
Inderkum Tigers take on state No. 1
Justin Reber wanted to challenge his Inderkum Tigers this season as the school’s football coach, and the schedule is doing that.
The opening game was a 28-12 setback to upstart Destiny Christian Academy of Rosemont, then there was a much-needed 35-6 rout of CIF Northern Section No. 1 Pleasant Valley of Chico. The next two games are whoppers.
On Saturday night in the finale of the San Juan Hills Classic First Responders Bowl in Orange County, Inderkum will face nationally ranked Santa Margarita at 8 p.m. The program is state-ranked No. 1 by Cal-Hi Sports and MaxPreps and nationally ranked in the top three in various polls. Santa Margarita is the defending CIF State Open Division champion, the highest classification in the state.
On Sept. 18, Inderkum will host Bee No. 1-ranked Folsom. Reber isn’t concussed. He’s confident that these sorts of showdowns can test and mold a program.
Terry Stark wins first game at Antelope
Terry Stark entered this season with 230 victories, among the most in regional history. He won his 231st last Friday, his first victory with the Antelope Titans after taking several years off to recharge and to fix his sore old body. Most of his victories were at Inderkum.
A week after dropping a 12-0 game to defending CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV champion Roseville, Antelope found its gear and beat Vista del Lago of Folsom 33-27 as the Titans are learning Stark’s old-school wing-T rushing offense on the fly.
Scores of family, friends and former Mira Loma High teammates watched Stark back in his element.
