A 22-year-old man died after reportedly being swept over Nevada Fall in Yosemite National Park over the weekend.

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday confirmed the victim’s identity as Josue Baires Alfaro. The Sheriff’s Office could not confirm Alfaro’s hometown.
Alfaro was in the Merced River above the 317-foot Nevada Fall, accessible from Mist Trail in the park, at an elevation gain of approximately 6,000 feet, according to the National Park Service website.
The National Park Service has confirmed with multiple news outlets that an investigation is underway.
Yosemite National Park could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Reports about the fatal incident began when an unnamed individual made a post on Reddit on Saturday, asking for additional information about the person who allegedly fell from Nevada Falls earlier in the day.
The original poster, who claimed to have been present at the time of the event, said they “heard people screaming” and they initially thought there had been a bear sighting.

A woman who was reportedly in the river at the same time was rescued when someone handed her a tree branch, but Alfaro was swept into the fall.
The poster described the event as “horrifying to see” and noted helicopters flew into the area along with rescuers with “materials.”
Yosemite National Park confirmed with multiple news outlets that emergency personnel responded to the incident and additional information is not available at this time.
