In-N-Out Burger announced three “updates” via social media on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
“We remain committed to serving our customers with the freshest, highest-quality food possible,” company representatives wrote in Tuesday’s Instagram post.
“Over the years, we’ve made meaningful changes to our ingredients, and this past year was no exception,” In-N-Out said. “We’re pleased to share our latest updates, and we’ll continue building on that commitment for years to come.”
Here’s what is changing — and why:
What is In-N-Out?
In 1948, In-N-Out opened its first restaurant in Los Angeles suburb Baldwin Park — becoming the first California burger stand to offer a drive-thru option.
In February 2025, the fast food chain founded by Harry and Esther Snyder announced it would move its headquarters back to Baldwin Park after operating in Irvine for 32 years.
In-N-Out currently operates more than 440 locations across 10 states.
The company has more than 280 restaurants in California, including locations in Sacramento, Modesto, Fresno, Merced and San Luis Obispo County.
What is on the In-N-Out menu?
As its name suggests, In-N-Out Burger is famous for its straightforward menu featuring hamburgers, hamburgers, french fries and drinks.
The restaurant chain also offers a “not so secret menu” that lets diners customize their mean. Ordering a burger “animal style” means that it comes with extra spread, while a “protein style” burger comes wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun.
Beverage options include sodas, pink lemonade, iced tea, milk, coffee and hot cocoa.

For dessert, In-N-Out offers milkshakes in three flavors — chocolate, strawberry and vanilla — made with real ice cream.
How is popular fast-food chain’s menu changing and why?
On Tuesday, In-N-Out Burger announced that it will no longer use sesame flour to make buns.
The chain is replacing packets of iodized salt with sea salt.
Finally, In-N-Out said, it’s swapping high-fructose corn syrup for real sugar in its ketchup.
Although In-N-Out didn’t specify why it’s making those chances, shifting federal regulations were behind an earlier update.
In May 2025, In-N-Out became one of the first fast-food companies to tweak its offerings in response to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s plan to phase out artificial food dyes by the end of 2026., according to Nation’s Restaurant News.
In-N-Out announced it was removing synthetic red food coloring from its pink lemonade and strawberry shakes, The Sacramento Bee reported at the time.
“As part of our ongoing commitment to providing our customers with the highest-quality ingredients, we have removed artificial coloring from our strawberry shakes and signature pink lemonade,” an In-N-Out spokesperson told KTLA in May 2025.
