Kings draft 3-and-D guard as veterans face uncertain futures in Sacramento

The Sacramento Kings acquired their point guard of the future and made a trade to improve their wing depth on the first day of the NBA draft.

On Day 2, the Kings chose to bolster their backcourt with a 3-and-D guard as veterans DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine and Malik Monk all facing uncertain futures in Sacramento.

A day after drafting Arkansas star Darius Acuff with the No. 7 pick and acquiring the draft rights to UConn forward Alex Karaban, the Kings selected Houston guard Emanuel Sharp in the second round with the 45th overall pick.

Sharp averaged 15.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals to help Houston reach the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. He shot 41.3% from the field, 37.2% from 3-point range and 88.1% at the free-throw line. Sharp was second on the team in scoring behind freshman Kingston Flemings, who was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks at No. 8 after averaging 16.1 points for the Cougars.

Sharp, 23, was measured at 6-2 ¾ without shoes at the NBA combine. At Houston, he established a reputation as an exceptional defender and outstanding perimeter shooter and.

Sharp earned Big 12 Conference Al-Defensive Team and Big 12 tournament MVP honors as a junior. He was a first-team All-Big 12 selection as a senior.

DeRozan, LaVine and Monk have all been the subject of trade rumors and speculation as Kings general manager Scott Perry looks to reshape the roster and cut salary. If the Kings can’t find a trade partner for DeRozan, they are expected to use the stretch provision to waive the 17-year veteran and allow him to become a free agent.
