California law limits the sale of legal fireworks to the period from noon June 28 to noon July 6 in 2026, but local jurisdictions, including Sacramento, may specify shorter schedules.
In unincorporated Sacramento County, legal fireworks can only be sold through 9 p.m. July 4, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said. Individual cities may have their own rules.
Some outlying counties, such as unincorporated Placer County, ban the sale and use of private fireworks entirely, usually because of wildfire dangers.

Only fireworks with the state fire marshal’s “safe and sane” seal can be sold in California, firefighters said.
State-approved fireworks generally consist of ground-based fountains, spinners and some handheld and novelty items. Fireworks that launch into the air — such as bottle rockets — dart across the ground or explode are considered dangerous and are strictly prohibited for use.
Legal fireworks may only be discharged between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. in unincorporated Sacramento County and Rancho Cordova. In Citrus Heights, 9 p.m. is the deadline.
