When the Fever faced the Phoenix Mercury on June 22, DeWanna Bonner and Caitlin Clark got in a heated exchange during the fourth quarter. Cunningham eventually entered the mix and got under Bonner’s skin simply by pointing in her direction.
That simple gesture from Cunningham became a very popular meme last week. She talked about all the online commotion during a recent episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast.
“So, what happened is… [DeWanna Bonner] is the one that did something extra, and then Caitlin got the tech. So I walked out there, and I was literally talking to the ref… I was like, ‘Now, Caitlin got one, but why didn’t [Bonner] get one? Because if Caitlin is gonna get one, then she should have got one. It shouldn’t have been one or the other,” Cunningham said, via Indiana Fever on SI. “And I was just kind of pointing, and [Bonner] like, ‘Don’t you point at me!’ And I was like, ‘Oh, shouldn’t have said that.’ And I didn’t say a word. So stupid! Like, that is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.”
No denying Sophie’s popularity.
The memes of Cunningham pointing generated so much buzz that even the White House posted a clip of her on X.

During this Friday’s practice, Cunningham was asked about being featured in the White House’s social media post.
“Everyone around the world is posting it, they’re just getting on board,” Cunningham said. “I don’t really think twice about it. They’re just another group who is posting about it.”
WNBA fans believe Cunningham wisely skirted around the question to avoid stirring up any drama.
Cunningham will return to the hardwood on Sunday for a showdown with the Las Vegas Aces.
