NEW YORK – One day after Byron Buxton was voted an American League All-Star starter, he exited Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees in the first inning after he aggravated his prior right hip injury.

Buxton reached on an infield single in the top of the first inning, a comebacker that deflected off pitcher Ryan Weathers’ glove. Then he was caught stealing for the first time in two years, tagged on his foot during a headfirst slide.
Rookie Kyler Fedko replaced Buxton in center field for the bottom of the first inning at Yankee Stadium.
Buxton returned to the Twins lineup Saturday following a four-game absence because of a right hip impingement. He went 1 for 3 with two RBI, a run and a walk in an 11-4 victory.

The 32-year-old Buxton was running on two full-count pitches to Kody Clemens, the first pitch fouled away, before he was thrown out in a strike-‘em-out, throw-‘em-out double play. It ended a streak of 37 consecutive stolen bases by Buxton, a streak that dated to May 1, 2024, in Chicago.
The last time Buxton was caught stealing, in a similar situation where he was running on multiple full-count pitches, it led to a trip on the injured list due to right knee inflammation.
