While the San Francisco 49ers are 6-0 and looking like the best team in the NFL right now, their roster isn’t complete — and even if they were fully healthy, it still wouldn’t be complete.

The thinking across the league is that San Francisco needs one more proven pass rusher, whether it is a defensive end or an interior defensive lineman, to truly solidify its chances of winning the Super Bowl championship. While the team has played well defensively, especially in crunch time, this season, the playoffs come down to matchups, and the lack of a second pass rusher alongside Nick Bosa means opponents can place two blockers on Bosa to neutralize him.
Khalil Mack, a veteran edge rusher who currently plays for the Los Angeles Chargers, is considered one of the biggest trade candidates in the NFL right now. With the Nov. 10 trade deadline approaching, some feel he would be a great fit for a Niners squad that is looking to win its first world championship since the 1994 season.
A Niners star seems to want Mack
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area posted on X (formerly Twitter) that 49ers star tight end George Kittle talked to general manager John Lynch about the possibility of acquiring Mack from Los Angeles.
49ers GM John Lynch said George Kittle asked him Thursday about the possibility of acquiring veteran edge Khalil Mack, who has three sacks for the 0-5 Chargers. https://t.co/pz6u2RO0MQ

Mack could be on his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He has made the Pro Bowl nine times and the All-Pro First Team three times, and as recently as 2023, he had a career-high 17 sacks. Through six games this season, the 35-year-old has posted three sacks, six quarterback hits, five tackles for loss and 19 total tackles (11 solo).
He is in the final year of his contract, as he signed a one-year, $18 million deal in March after contemplating retirement. While he has been to the NFL playoffs six times, he has lost each of his six postseason games.
One would think that Mack would love an opportunity to win a Vince Lombardi Trophy in what could be his final season. But there is always the chance that the Chargers will consult with him and try to send him to a team of his choice. After all of his individual success, and given that this is his fifth season with L.A., he may be worthy of that type of treatment.
