As mumps cases climb, Aztecs list nearly three dozen players on Pac-12 availability report

San Diego State listed nearly three dozen players on its initial Pac-12 Availability Report released Wednesday night. It included 15 players listed on SDSU’s two-deep as either “doubtful” or “out” for this weekend’s game against Texas State.

Among those listed out for the Aztecs are starting running back Lucky Sutton and right guard Michael Leville Watkins.

Among those listed as doubtful are running back Javion Kinnard, who started in place of Sutton against James Madison and was injured last week against Toledo. Starting wide receiver Bert Emanuel Jr. and tight ends Jackson Ford and Ryan Wolfer are listed as questionable.

Conference schools list players in four categories: probable, questionable, doubtful and out. The injury report is updated each of the three days leading up to game day and then within two hours of kickoff on game day. SDSU (1-3) opens Pac-12 play against the Bobcats (2-2) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Snapdragon Stadium.

“The football gods have not really favored us with the injury luck,” SDSU coach Sean Lewis said after Wednesday morning’s practice. “Guys have got to be ready to step into the light when the time comes. … We’ve been given a nice storm here. But this too shall pass, and we’ve got to be able to see our way through it.”

Texas State’s Availability Report included 14 players. Four backups are listed as out. The others are listed as questionable.

SDSU had its share of injuries during the season’s four nonconference games, but complicating matters for the team is a mumps outbreak that has affected more than a dozen players on the team.

The university sent a health alert on Wednesday, noting that a mumps outbreak first acknowledged on Sept. 18 now includes 14 confirmed cases and one probable case. That’s up from an initial three confirmed and two probable cases. The statement said that all the cases remain isolated to a single athletics team that it did not identify. That team is football, according to sources.

As far as the Availability Report, Lewis said he likes the transparency.

“It’s good,” he said. “It sure saves a lot of time from scouring the internet, press conferences and the local reporters about what’s being said and who’s out and who’s available. This is what it is, and we’re going to do it the next four days as we get into conference play. Transparency’s good. There’s nothing wrong with that. As we continue to move through it, as we’re a month into it, you turn on the tape and you know who’s hobbled, who’s dressed or not. A majority of it is there. As a lot of things have changed, (coaches) have become much more open about.

“Again, the coverage of each team has gotten so good, between local reporters and message boards, it’s out there, anyway. We share the information pretty forthright(ly). The men and the coaches that are in the Pac-12 Conference are forthright with the information. There’s not a whole lot of gamesmanship anymore the way there was back in the day when there weren’t quite as many eyeballs day in and day out on the programs.”
