California’s average price for a gallon of regular gas has increased by 10 cents over the past week, according to AAA and GasBuddy.
Instability in the Middle East — including ongoing concerns over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz — has helped drive crude oil prices toward $90 a barrel.
AAA said this “could continue driving up costs during the second half of summer.”
“Average gasoline and diesel prices rose in nearly every state over the last week, as continued escalations between the U.S. and Iran, renewed Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and fresh Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries combined to keep upward pressure on both crude and refined product markets,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a Monday, July 27, news release.

Will California fuel costs continue to increase?
According to GasBuddy, there might be some relief ahead for California drivers.
De Haan said a pullback in hostilities over the weekend caused oil prices to fall sharply when markets reopened Sunday, July 26, which could slow the pace of price increases at the pump in the coming days.
“For now, motorists should expect prices to remain elevated, but the intensity of further gains will depend heavily on how the geopolitical situation develops in the coming week,” De Haan said.
