The Tennessee Titans went to Baltimore as a team no expert was picking, and for three quarters Cam Ward and Robert Saleh gave nobody a reason to reconsider. Then they made it close enough to sting.

The Ravens held on 24-18 on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium, dropping Tennessee to 0-4. Baltimore played the entire second half without Lamar Jackson, who left with an ankle injury on the last offensive snap before halftime, and did not score again. The Titans still needed until the final 72 seconds to reach the end zone a second time.
Losers from the Titans’ loss to the Ravens
Cam Ward
A week after a costly interception against the Giants, Ward threw another on his second pass. Trenton Simpson returned it 24 yards to the Tennessee 37, and Derrick Henry scored five plays later. Those seven points were more than the final margin.
His line of 20 of 31 for 222 yards and a touchdown pass looks fine because of a late 70-yard drive. Before that, with Tyler Huntley running Baltimore’s offense and the deficit at 14, the Titans went three-and-out on three straight possessions and gained 4 yards on those nine plays.
Robert Saleh
Trailing 14-7 in the second quarter, Tennessee had first-and-goal at the Baltimore 8 and handed to Tony Pollard four straight times. The fourth was a direct snap on fourth-and-goal from the 2, and Nnamdi Madubuike stopped it for no gain. The decision to go for it is defensible. A fourth straight Pollard run into a front that had just stopped three of them is much harder to defend for a team that has had trouble in the red zone all season.
Saleh’s defense followed by allowing a 98-yard touchdown drive, with a 52-yard Jackson pass to Zay Flowers covering most of it. A chance to tie became a 21-7 deficit in a game Tennessee lost by six.
Tony Pollard
Pollard scored Tennessee’s first touchdown on a 3-yard run, and that was his high point. He finished with 16 carries for 48 yards and a long of 7, got 6 yards on the four goal-line carries and caught two of four targets for 2 yards. Titans running backs totaled 57 yards on 21 carries. Ward’s 27 yards on four scrambles were the best thing the ground game produced.

Calvin Ridley
Ridley is supposed to be the veteran wide receiver in a young room, and he finished with one catch for 13 yards on two targets. The Titans threw 31 times and trailed for the entire second half. That is not enough from a starter.
Winners from the Titans’ loss to the Ravens
Carnell Tate
The rookie Tennessee drafted over Caleb Downs caught nine of 12 targets for 145 yards, nearly two-thirds of Ward’s total, including a 33-yarder on fourth-and-11 that set up the late touchdown.
It was not a clean day. Kyle Hamilton punched the ball out at the end of another 33-yard catch late in the first half, and Baltimore turned that into Tyler Loop’s 64-yard field goal as the half expired. Even so, Tate was the one Titan the Ravens could not cover.
Chimere Dike
Dike returned four kickoffs for 126 yards, an average of 31.5, and opened the game with a 40-yard return and a 15-yard catch that had Tennessee at the Baltimore 43 after one snap. Holding penalties on teammates cost field position on two of his other returns.
Saleh’s start with the Titans already had uncomfortable history attached at 0-3, and 0-4 adds to it. Tennessee hosts the Houston Texans next Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
