State Senate officials said they have no reason to believe the threat was credible. California Highway Patrol was assessing the threat and inspecting the construction site.
“We’re aware of a reported threat at the State Capitol,” CHP spokesperson Kelly DeLeon said around 1 p.m. in an email to The Sacramento Bee. “As a precaution, the building has been evacuated while CHP sweeps the building. We will share additional information as it is confirmed.”
DeLeon in an update at 4:55 p.m. said the CHP had “completed a sweep of the construction site and the Capitol building; both are clear and deemed safe.” The Capitol will reopen 9 a.m. Monday with its normal operating hours, and the CHP will continue to investigate the threat, DeLeon said.
In an email to employees, Erika Contreras, secretary of the state Senate, said the annex construction team alerted Senate officials on Friday morning about the reported threat made on the construction site.

“Out of an abundance of caution, work crews are being asked to leave the construction site, and we are also directing Senate employees working in the Historic Capitol Building to leave the building,” Contreras said in the email. “The staff in the Legislative Office Building and the Swing Space are not impacted and may remain in their offices.”
Contreras told Senate employees that they had no reason to believe the reported threat was credible, but the CHP was assessing the threat and inspecting the construction site. Capitol building staff were asked to work remotely from home for the rest of the day.
Employees in the Legislative Office Building and the Swing Space building is located at 1021 O St. near the Capitol building in Sacramento. Lawmakers were not in session Friday.
