Carlos Alcaraz in Line for US Open Mixed Doubles Wild Card

There is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding Carlos Alcaraz’s participation at this year’s US Open. The Spaniard is the defending champion after beating his longtime rival Jannik Sinner in last year’s final to claim the sixth Grand Slam title of his career.

However, a right wrist injury suffered at the Barcelona Open kept Alcaraz out of competitive action for four months. Fans were hoping to see him make his return at the Cincinnati Open, but the Spaniard ultimately decided to pull out of the tournament, further raising questions about whether he will be ready in time for Flushing Meadows.

While there is still no official confirmation on whether Alcaraz will compete at the US Open this year, there is an encouraging update for his fans.

Has the US Open Reserved a Wild Card for Carlos Alcaraz?

According to Spanish publication Marca, the USTA has apparently reserved one wild card spot for Alcaraz in the mixed-doubles event at the US Open.

A total of 16 mixed-doubles teams will compete for the title, with eight teams receiving wild cards from the USTA. Six teams will gain direct entry into the draw, while the remaining spots will be filled through the wild-card selections.

Some of the teams already linked to wild cards include Naomi Osaka and Kei Nishikori, as well as Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper, among others.

According to the report, one of the wild cards has been reserved for Alcaraz should he decide to compete. It does not necessarily confirm that the Spaniard will play, but it does give fans another encouraging sign as his team continues to assess his condition.

Last year, Alcaraz teamed up with Emma Raducanu in the mixed doubles event. However, neither player currently appears on this year’s entry list.

If Alcaraz ultimately decides that he is healthy enough to compete at Flushing Meadows, the reserved wild card would give him an opportunity to return to the US Open in another interesting capacity alongside his title defense in men’s singles.
