Will Tony Romo be back in the broadcasting booth for Week 2?
The legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback turned CBS NFL announcer was sidelined for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL regular season. J.J. Watt replaced Romo in CBS’s No. 1 announcing booth. Watt worked alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson, on the call of the Minnesota Vikings vs. Green Bay Packers game.

CBS’s No. 1 NFL announcing crew has the Patriots vs. Steelers game in Week 2. They then have the Cowboys vs. Ravens game in Week 3. While Dallas could make for a nice return game for Romo, it won’t be happening.
The network has announced that it is sticking with Watt for Week 2 and Week 3 of the 2026 NFL regular season.
“NEW: CBS has announced its Week 2 and Week 3 announce schedule. J.J. Watt remains on the No. 1 team. Tony Romo is not listed,” Richard Deitsch shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday.
Romo was arrested on suspicion of OWI in Milwaukee, Wisconsin earlier this summer. He later admitted to having issues with alcohol and pain medication.
“This morning, I faced a recent personal failure by pleading no contest to a civil offense for OWI in Wisconsin,” Romo wrote earlier this month. “I own this completely.”
“Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant, debilitating pain,” he said. “That pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.”
Romo hopes to return to CBS at some point.
“As I have taught my three young sons: when you fall short, you stand up and take full responsibility,” he added. “This is an important first step. The harder and more important step is examining the path that brought you here and making the changes necessary to move forward.
“That path requires honesty. None of this is an excuse. These are my failures, and I take that responsibility for them,” he wrote.
“I am working closely with a team of doctors to address my health and make the necessary changes,” Romo said. “I am deeply grateful for the support of my family, my friends, and the NFL community including players, coaches, and owners. Your encouragement has meant more to me than you know.”

His return won’t be happening this month, though.
