Chris Godwin Jr. Lands in Trade Deadline Talk as the Buccaneers Fall to 1-5

Chris Godwin Jr. has spent most of his career as one of the steadiest pieces in Tampa Bay. At 1-5, the Buccaneers have reason to break from Jason Licht’s trade habits, and CBS Sports listed Godwin to Pittsburgh among 10 moves that need to happen before the Nov. 10 trade deadline.

Sunday’s 26-19 overtime loss to the Steelers at Raymond James Stadium was another close one. All five losses have come by seven points or fewer. “We’ve got no margin for error,” coach Todd Bowles said after the game, per the team’s website.

What the Buccaneers would be selling

Godwin is healthy, which hasn’t always been the case since the ankle injury that ended his 2024 season. He has 23 catches for 216 yards on 30 targets through six games, and he played 68 snaps against Pittsburgh with a 57.8 receiving grade, according to PFF. He also headlined our list of Buccaneers who could be moved after a slow start. Second-year receiver Emeka Egbuka leads the team with 49 targets and caught Sunday’s only touchdown pass.

Everything around Godwin makes the case stronger. Baker Mayfield has missed three straight games with a thumb injury Tampa Bay is slow-playing, leaving undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels to start. Daniels went 22 of 43 for 164 yards with one touchdown pass and two interceptions against the Steelers and was sacked five times. The Bucs rank 30th in passing yards per game at 164.8, and only one team has allowed more than their 22 sacks. Mike Evans is gone too, and he has explained his reason for leaving.

Godwin signed a three-year, $66 million deal in March 2025. Spotrac lists a $33.7 million cap hit this season and $29.9 million for 2027, when the dead money drops to $16.2 million. A buyer would take on the rest of this year’s salary, and Tampa Bay would get a head start on clearing that 2027 number.

Pittsburgh, with Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson on injured reserve, is one logical fit. With the collapse against the Steelers adding to the case against Todd Bowles, moving a 30-year-old receiver for draft capital would show Bucs fans which way the front office sees this season heading.
