Elk Grove opens cooling center as heat wave hits region. Here’s where to go

The city of Elk Grove is opening a cooling center this weekend in anticipation of a heat wave bringing blistering temperatures to the capital region.

The Wackford Community Complex at 9014 Bruceville Road was scheduled to be open from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday for residents who lacked shelter or adequate home cooling, according to the city. The center’s operating dates could be extended depending on the weather.

A “limited” number of animal kennels will be available at the shelter in order to keep pets cool, according to the release.

According to the National Weather Service, Elk Grove is expected to see a high temperature of 100 degrees on Saturday, rising to 102 degrees on Sunday and 104 degrees on Monday.

The city urged residents to stay indoors in a cool place, stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities in the sun from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
