On Sunday at 12:19 a.m. an extreme heat warning was issued by the NWS Las Vegas NV valid from 11 a.m. until Friday 8 p.m. for Death Valley.

The NWS informs, “Dangerously hot conditions with high temperatures near 110 degrees and overnight lows only getting down to around 85 degrees. This will yield at least major heat risk, impacting anyone without adequate cooling and hydration.”

“Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events,” says the NWS.

This warning is in effect until Friday at 8 p.m.

Tips from the NWS for staying safe during a heat wave

  • Stay hydrated: Keep yourself well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
  • Seek cool shelter: Opt for an air-conditioned room to stay comfortable.
  • Look out for others: Stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
  • Child and pet safety: Never leave young children and pets unattended in hot vehicles – car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
  • Be mindful outdoors: Take extra precautions when working or spending time outside.
  • Optimal Timing: When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Recognize early indicators: Learn to identify the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Dress for comfort: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. In an emergency, call 911.
