Jiamo Chen, 43, was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail. Chen remained in custody Thursday afternoon at the jail. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office had not formally filed charges against Chen, and his arraignment in Sacramento Superior Court had not been scheduled.
Investigators believe Chen has taught music in the Sacramento area for about 10 years, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday in a news release.
Sheriff’s officials said investigators with the Sacramento Valley Hi-Tech Crimes Task Force conducted an investigation into a suspect, later identified as Chen, for alleged downloading of child sexual abuse material.
Detectives learned Chen operates a music studio at his Fair Oaks home, where he provides music lessons to students. Sheriff’s officials said many of Chen’s students are children, including some as young as 4 years old.
On Wednesday, investigators served a search warrant at Chen’s home and found evidence of child sexual abuse material, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s officials said, investigators as of Thursday had not uncovered evidence indicating Chen had inappropriate physical contact with a child.
However, considering the nature of the investigation and Chen’s access to children through his music instruction, sheriff’s officials said investigators want to ensure no inappropriate contact with a child has gone unreported. The investigators were not aware of any previous reports or concerns involving Chen, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s officials encouraged parents or guardians whose children received music lessons from Chen to speak with their children about their interactions with their music teacher.
Investigators asked anyone who is aware of concerning or potentially criminal conduct relevant to this investigation to call the Sheriff’s Office at 916-874-5115 or the local law enforcement agency.
