With the fall semester in session, State Center Community College District is remaining tight-lipped about any potential fallout from the viral fist fight between two leaders in the athletics department — though there appear to be changes going on behind the scenes.

Derrick Johnson and Jesse White, respective heads of the athletics departments at Fresno City College and Madera Community College, garnered attention after a video circulated showing them brawling on a Lake Tahoe beach.
The video was uploaded May 31 — just ahead of the annual California Community College Athletic Directors Association convention in South Lake Tahoe on June 1–4.
An SCCCD spokesperson confirmed the district was aware of the video and conducting an investigation but declined to give more information.
While SCCCD spokespeople remain tight-lipped, the district did advertise for an interim associate dean of athletics for Fresno City College — a short-term version of the position that Johnson most recently held, according to the district’s most recently updated directory. The job listing opened July 22 and closed Aug. 3 with a salary range of $158,139–$177,986.
The new hire is set to start Aug. 24, per the now-expired posting.
Earlier this month, athletics pages for FCC and MCC each listed Johnson and White in their AD positions. However, shortly after the new academic year began Aug. 10, both men were no longer listed on their respective sites’ athletics pages.
The Bee submitted a records request to the district requesting communications pertaining to the physical altercation between Johnson and White, as well as disciplinary action and investigations. SCCCD denied the requests regarding discipline and investigations, and the district said a “thorough search” for communications about the general physical altercation didn’t yield any results.

The Bee later requested information on the status of the alleged investigation.
Fresno City College spokesperson Cris Monahan-Bremer did not respond to The Bee’s inquiry. Diana Ramirez and Cory Burkarth, spokespeople for SCCCD and Madera Community College, respectively, both sent the following statement:
“In accordance with California law, the District does not discuss personnel matters. Online directories and webpages are updated periodically and may not always reflect current staffing information. Athletics programs and operations at both Fresno City College and Madera Community College continue under designated administrative oversight.”
Ramirez declined to provide clarity on what the district meant by both athletics programs being under administrative oversight or how that differs from the status quo.
Johnson’s information is listed in an updated July 2026. This directory includes information for athletics departments at the district’s Fresno, Clovis and Reedley colleges — though any information pertaining to athletics at Madera Community College is omitted. The district did not explain this omission.
Neither Johnson nor White responded to messages from The Bee seeking comment.
