Father and son convicted in series of 2023 Sacramento County ATM robberies

A father and his adult son were convicted of nine robberies committed over nearly four months in 2023, when prosecutors said they ambushed people withdrawing money from Sacramento County ATMs and threatened them with a gun.

A jury on Thursday convicted Deleon Lee Joseph, 45, and his son, Myahl Chapman-Joseph, 24, of charges stemming from the ATM robberies, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office announced in a news release.

Joseph was found guilty of one count of robbery with an enhancement for being armed with a gun during the crime, prosecutors said. Investigators said Joseph acted as the getaway driver in the robberies.

Chapman-Joseph was found guilty of eight counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery, along with an enhancement for using a gun in the robberies, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

The jury also found aggravating factors that involved planning, professionalism or sophistication and found that Chapman-Joseph was armed with a weapon.

The armed ATM robberies occurred from Sept. 9 through Dec. 25, 2023. Prosecutors said the father-and-son duo carried out nine robberies at Wells Fargo and Golden 1 Credit Union ATMs.

In each robbery, Chapman-Joseph wore a mask to conceal his identity, ambushed victims as they were withdrawing money from an ATM and threatened them with a firearm, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said investigators searched the father and son’s home and found two firearms that were used in the robberies.
