The SEC is currently in the midst of its worst national championship drought of the modern era. Pundits point to the NIL discrepancy for the SEC’s fall-off. Big Ten fans are reveling in the northern schools’ newfound dominance. Some might go as far as to say the Southeastern Conference is in full-blown crisis mode.

For all the talk about the SEC losing its grip on the sport, the conference is still far and away the sport’s deepest league. And at the top of that heap sit the Georgia Bulldogs.
Led by stalwart Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs might be the SEC’s best hope in capturing its first national championship since 2022. Quarterback Gunner Stockton is back after a strong 2025 campaign. The defense returns a bevy of young defenders that, in all likelihood, will hear their names called in next year’s NFL Draft.
The Bulldogs staved off Alabama at Mercedes-Benz Stadium last season to hoist the SEC title game trophy. This season, Georgia will have its sights set on something bigger: getting back to the top of the college football mountain.
Here are five bold predictions for Georgia in 2026.

Georgia Will Make the 2026 College Football Playoff
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Georgia has to replace a ton of talent from last season’s football team.
The Bulldogs lost six of their seven leading receivers from the 2025 college football season. Zachariah Branch, last year’s receptions record-setter, is off to the NFL. Colbie Young, Dillon Bell, Noah Thomas, Oscar Delp and Cash Jones are also gone.
The biggest question for Georgia in 2026 is centered around whether the Bulldogs can generate enough explosive plays to reach their sky-high expectations. But with Stockton back and Smart’s proven recruiting track record, it feels like a safe bet the Bulldogs will find ways to score enough points and continue to win football games.
Barring something extreme happening, Georgia should be part of the 12-team College Football Playoff field.

Gunner Stockton Will Throw for Over 2,800 Yards and Rush for 500 yards in 2026
Georgia’s offense was sneaky productive last season. The Bulldogs scored 35 or more points seven times and proved that even when the defense fell flat, they could hang tight in high-scoring games.
This time around, Georgia has to replace a ton of exiting talent on offense, and will likely need to be more sound on defense. Even so, Stockton should be one of the more prolific quarterbacks in the SEC once again.
In 2025, Stockton threw for almost 2,900 yards and 24 touchdowns, and chipped in another 10 scores on the ground. This season, he’ll likely have a greater workload, and I expect him to flourish.
Georgia should score points. Can they create explosive plays? That could be a situation worth monitoring as the Bulldogs get into SEC play.

Bulldogs’ Receiver London Humphreys Will Be a Top-Two Target for Stockton in 2026
Georgia has its program-defining quarterback, but there are more than a few questions about who will step up from the receiving corps in 2026.

The Bulldogs lost six of their seven leading receivers from the 2025 college football season. That’s almost unprecedented, even in the transfer portal era. One holdover from last season that should be poised for a breakout campaign is wideout London Humphreys.
Humphreys was a bit-part player last season. He only tallied 18 catches for 276 yards and three touchdowns. In most scenarios, he wouldn’t be expected to make such a leap in 2026. But Georgia is not your typical program. Smart relies on homegrown guys, and I do not doubt that he and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo will place their faith in Humphreys to come good.
With a much bigger role this season, I suspect Humphreys will be one of Stockton’s preferred targets by the season’s end.

Georgia Will Avenge Last Season’s Regular-Season Loss to Alabama
Does Kirby Smart have an Alabama problem?
Smart doesn’t struggle against many programs year-over-year, but he’s just 2-7 against the Crimson Tide since taking over in Athens. However, a pair of the high-stakes battles went in Georgia’s favor, as Smart’s team knocked off Alabama in the 2021 national championship game and in last year’s SEC Championship showdown.
Last season, Alabama built up an early lead and held Georgia at bay for a 24-21 victory. It was Kalen DeBoer’s second-straight regular-season win over Smart.
This season, I suspect Georgia will get one over on DeBoer’s new-look Alabama team. Stockton will play well, the defense will make life hard for whoever Alabama starts at quarterback and Smart and company will walk out of Tuscaloosa with a win on Oct. 10.

The Bulldogs Will Lose in the SEC Championship Game Against Texas
At this rate, it’s difficult to not put faith in Smart to figure it out. He’s reached legend status in Athens and has consistently reigned supreme over the SEC since Nick Saban stepped down.
But every season is different – and there are plenty of newcomers coming for the Bulldogs’ crown. Ole Miss brings back plenty of offensive firepower. LSU hauled in a massive transfer portal class and will look to reinvent itself under new coach Lane Kiffin. And perhaps the biggest challenger to mighty Georgia will come in the form of Texas.
The Longhorns bring back budding superstar Arch Manning, impact transfer wideout Cam Coleman and plenty of stalwarts on the defensive side of the ball. I’m buying what Steve Sarkisian and Texas are selling this season.
Georgia will make the SEC title game once again, but they’ll fall short against Manning and the Longhorns.
